The Real Deficit: Our Troops Part II

Doing some minor investigation into the money problem at Fort Sam Houston, the problem seems epidemic. My initial response about the deficit was: why would a base so important to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan miss its funding requirements? However, I am not the first person to ask this question even though the mainstream media hasn’t paid a lot of attention to the problem. In fact, Congressmen Lamar Smith of San Antonio is demanding answers from Rumsfeld and the Army Secretary. I will follow up with their response in the coming weeks.

As reported by the San Antonio Express:

Fort Hood in Killeen, Fort Bliss in El Paso and Fort Sill, Okla., among others, have made cuts similar to those seen in San Antonio. On-post housing referrals have been cut at Fort Hood, as have pest control contracts. A 100 percent hiring freeze is in place at all posts, and all summer hires are on hold until the supplemental becomes law.

The conclusion is far from resolved; however, it is very interesting that all forts that are housing troops are underfunded. This issue is far too important to neglect.
